Nine Inch Nails scrap concert film, tip plans for hiatus

Nine Inch Nails , who have been on tour for much of this year, have pulled the plug on plans for a major concert film, and group anchorman Trent Reznor says that his band's 2009 roadwork will be its last for some time.

According to a message Reznor posted yesterday (12/3) at NIN's website, plans had been in the works for moviemaker James Cameron's "team" to shoot in 3D an upcoming show that would be released in movie theaters, and subsequently sold in DVD and BluRay formats.

"I made two critical mistakes," Reznor wrote while explaining why he had to spike the project. "One was to approach a certain record company that owns some of the song rights about producing/funding. The second was to allow said company to f--- around as usual for months before saying 'Um... no.' We then achieved the impossible by finding alternate production/funding but the timetable is too rushed to get it filmed comfortably with the remaining time left on the tour."

The news of the scrapped film was the first of several blows that Reznor dealt to fans in his message, which went on to say that his 2009 stage show would be scaled down from the current elaborate production--which involves a massive, groundbreaking lightshow--and that a touring hiatus of indefinite length will follow.

"This was an amazing tour and production--certainly the best thing I've ever been involved with and likely the final tour for NIN on this scale," Reznor wrote. "... The shows we have announced in 2009 and any more that may be announced will be a completely different approach with some different personnel and will likely be the last for the foreseeable future."

Reznor and company have been touring behind a pair of 2008 releases: "The Slip," a full-length set that Reznor released in May for free via NIN's website; and "Ghosts I-IV," a 36-song instrumental set that he self-released in March. The band's stage during the in-progress run features a custom-made lighting apparatus that uses interactive technology developed specifically for the production by media-arts company Moment Factory. (A short making-of documentary is posted at the company's website.)

In addition to explaining why the film was derailed and setting the table for 2009, Reznor also did a little chest-beating about his band's current tour.

"Thank you to those who came out to see [this tour] and forgive me for having a Kanye West moment, but this was FOR SURE the best show of the year and any bulls--- end-of-the-year poll you may read in the next few weeks that says otherwise simply has it wrong. Those of you who saw it know I'm right."

NIN's North American fall tour continues tonight (12/4) in Kelowna, British Columbia, and wraps up in Las Vegas later this month. Details for the remaining 2008 dates are included below, and the group's currently confirmed 2009 dates, all of which are booked abroad, are posted at the band's website.
