Saliva pitches reality show, finishes 2008 on the road

Memphis-bred rockers Saliva are pitching a reality show called "Hick Parade," filmed during and just after the recording process for the group's fifth album "Cinco Diablo."

"We've always said it would be really funny to have cameras catch a lot of the stuff that happens to us on the road," said singer Josey Scott during an interview with LiveDaily. "Comedy is the secret that's kept us together, kept the five of us really close. That's how we get along day to day. We make each other laugh. I think if we didn't have a sense of humor, we would have broken up a long time ago. Like any relationship, it comes and goes. But through the strength of our sense of humor, I think it's been part of the glue that's kept us together."

Saliva--which also includes guitarist Wayne Swinny, bassist Dave Novotny, drummer Paul Crosby and guitarist Jonathan Montoya--is gearing up for the Dec. 16 release of "Cinco Diablo." The collection sees the group experimenting more with new sounds and technology to create a heavier vibe.

"We got so much mileage out of our heavy stuff on the 'Blood Stained Love Story' tour, so much of our stuff was used for NFL stuff and movie soundtracks in 2008 and last year [that] we just wanted to see if we could write a heavy record," Scott said.

"It still has all the peaks and valleys of a Saliva record, but it's predominately heavy, I would say," he added.

Aiding in that heavy sound is Shinedown singer Brent Smith on the song "My Own Worst Enemy," the second track on the album.

"He's awesome," Scott said. "He's a good friend. We've been on tour with them a lot. He's a good guy. He's kind of an octave higher than me. An individual as talented as him brings their own little flavor to the song. We got what we were looking for out of him."

Since the release of its breakthrough 2001 album, "Every Six Seconds," Saliva's music has been synonymous with sporting events and movie soundtracks.

"It's pretty cool," Scott said. "I was at an Oklahoma/Texas game and I heard ['Ladies and Gentleman']. We're from Memphis--none of us live there anymore--and we got to play halftime at the Memphis Grizzlies season opener for the NBA this year. It was cool."

But Saliva hopes to not only inspire athletes and sports fans; it wishes to touch all listeners.

"We've always considered ourselves a sheep in wolf's clothing in this industry," Scott explained. "People expect you to be devil worshippers. They expect you to be a part of the problem and not a part of the solution. Once you open up our album and read our lyrics, you find that it's really inspirational. [We're] actually trying to keep the shotgun out of somebody's mouth [and] lift people up instead of destroying yourself along with others."
