Celtic Woman lines up huge US outing
Irish vocal group Celtic Woman has unfurled a long list of US dates for 2009, with concerts spread across most of the first half of the coming year.
The trek, which is set to kick off Feb. 13 in St. Paul, MN, will roll through more than 70 cities next year during its thorough canvassing of the US map. The massive outing, dubbed the "Isle of Hope Tour," also includes many multi-night engagements, including three-night stretches in both Boston (3/20-22) and Seattle (5/15-17). Details are included below.
Most of the shows go on sale to the public Dec. 15, but fans will have to wait until March to purchase tickets for most dates in May, June and July. Check out the group's website for information on specific dates.
The group is supporting its current best-of release, "The Greatest Journey: Essential Collection." Recorded under the musical direction of David Downes, the set gathers material from the group's previous releases, along with four new songs ("The Call","Pie Jesu", "Ave Maria" and "You Raise Me Up"). The LP follows last year's "Celtic Woman: A New Journey," which was filmed at Slane Castle in Ireland, and captures the ensemble's second on-stage production.
The Celtic Woman phenomenon began as a 90-minute show for PBS, which premiered in the US in March 2005, according to the group's bio. The program aired more than 3,400 times on 316 PBS stations and its success led to the full-scale touring production.
The group currently comprises vocalists Chloe Agnew, Lisa Kelly, Alex Sharpe and Lynn Hilary along with fiddle player Mairead Nesbitt. In addition to recording with Celtic Woman, each of the ladies has released her own solo album.
