Grammy hopeful Adele extends US tour
Emerging British singer/songwriter Adele has added another round of stateside dates to her 2009 schedule, and now she has another reason to visit the US: four Grammy nominations.
Adele's previously announced January trek has already logged sellouts in Somerville, MA; Washington, DC; Philadelphia; and Chicago, and venues have been upgraded in San Francisco and Los Angeles, according to her MySpace page. Since last check, she's added a nine-show March run across the US and a May 5 gig in New York City. An updated itinerary is included below.
Opening for Adele on the upcoming dates will be British singer/guitarist James Morrison, who was the best-selling male solo artist in the UK in 2006.
Between tours, Adele will be in Los Angeles for the Feb. 8 Grammy Awards ceremony, where she'll be gunning for Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance trophies.
The nominations add to the many kudos surrounding the 20-year-old singer's Columbia Records debut, "19," which shot to the top of UK album charts in January and climbed to No. 11 on The Billboard 200 following its summer release in the US. The lead single, "Chasing Pavements," is holding a Top 20 spot on the Hot Adult radio chart after 22 weeks. That track and several others from the set are streaming at Adele's MySpace page.
Between US tour legs, the singer will hole up in a Malibu, CA, recording studio to work on her sophomore set, according to the Los Angeles Times. She told the paper her jazzy brand of heartbreak-soul may give way to a more country-influenced sound this time around.
Initial press surrounding Adele hailed her as the next Amy Winehouse, but critics have deemed the up-and-comer a more mature singer with wisdom beyond her years. Adele cites influences ranging from a diverse group of artists including Etta James, Jill Scott, Bjork, Dusty Springfield, Billy Bragg, Billie Holiday, Jeff Buckley, The Cure and Peggy Lee.
"I taught myself how to sing by listening to Ella Fitzgerald for acrobatics and scales, Etta James for passion and Roberta Flack for control," the performer explained in her bio.
Even before "19" surfaced in the UK, Adele was honored with the Brit Awards' first Critics Choice prize, and also won the BBC Music's Sound of 2008 poll of music critics, editors and broadcasters, according to her bio.
