U2 sets release date for new album

U2 's follow-up to 2004's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" will land in stores next March, the group announced today (12/18).

Titled "No Line on the Horizon," the new set is tagged with a March 2 release date, according to the band's website. As previously reported, the Irish rockers worked on the set with producers Brian Eno and Danny Lanois, with additional production by Steve Lillywhite.

Band members Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. covered some major ground while recording the new album, with sessions taking place in Morocco, Dublin, New York City, and London.

At one point, the band was recording material for the new album with super-producer Rick Rubin, but all of those sessions reportedly were shelved.

Though the group has not yet revealed any information about the album's first single, a music video apparently is already in the works, according to the group's website, which reports that the quartet "were holed up in a warehouse on the outskirts of London [last week] shooting a video with director Alex Courtes," for which they were "performing a brand new song."

"No Line on the Horizon" will mark U2's 12th studio album. Its predecessor, which featured the hit single "Vertigo," has sold 9 million copies worldwide, according to the band's website.

The new album will also be the first since the band signed a major deal with promotions juggernaut Live Nation. The 12-year agreement covers touring, merchandising and the band's website; the group's longstanding recording and publishing agreement with Universal Music as not affected by the move.

As part of its deal with U2, Live Nation gave the band 1.6 million shares of stock in the company with a guarantee that the company would buy them back for a minimum of $25 million. According to Forbes, the band took advantage of that guarantee yesterday, which forces Live Nation to take a $19 million loss; the stock (trade symbol LYV), which was priced around $13.50 per share at the time the company inked its deal with U2, was down to around $3.90 when the band dumped it.
