Album Review: Anya Marina, "Slow & Steady Seduction, Phase II" (Chop Shop)

Disc jockey-turned-songwriter Anya Marina 's sophomore release, "Slow & Steady Seduction, Phase II," is a playful blend of girly pop beats, lazy jazz tunes and breathy words or purrs.

"All The Same To Me," a light, coffeehouse shuffle that's rhyme-ridden and easy moving, sets the tone for the repetition and simplicity that defines most of these tracks. Whether its hand clapping, bratty chatting or delicate croons, Marina delivers upbeat vibes that never stray too far from mainstream-minded radio. Her raspy smokers' vocals mimic '40s jazz greats, while during more giddy moments she becomes a pouty pop princess.

Marina had production support from Brian Karscig (Louis XIV guitarist) and Britt Daniel (Spoon vocalist and guitarist), who created looped beats that are the foundation for several of the songs. The feisty foot-stomper "Two Left Feet" is one such track. "Take your coat off and make a mess of me," a sassy Marina sings on this lively feel-good tune. The record is marinated in rough and sexy attitude, but bubblegum lyrics like "E-I-E-I-O" keep things in a PG-13 spirit.

The entire album rolls pleasingly along without any major jolts or climaxes, and therein lies the disappointment. While "Slow & Steady Seduction, Phase II" is a lovely sunny-day soundtrack, it sometimes fades into background buzz and Fisher Price-style instrumental silliness.
