Ben Folds finds 'Way to Normal' on the road
Ben Folds ' brief winter trek has expanded to more than a dozen dates across the eastern US and into Canada.
The club/theater outing still kicks off Feb. 11 in Princeton, NJ, and now stretches through March 1. Nine cities have been added since last check, including Baltimore, Cincinnati and Atlanta. An updated itinerary is listed below.
Folds has tapped up-and-coming geek-rockers Miniature Tigers to open the shows. The Phoenix-based band has released its debut album, "Tell It To the Volcano," on iTunes and the set is due in stores this spring.
Folds continues to support his third solo album, "Way to Normal," which surfaced in September and landed at No. 11 on The Billboard 200. The lead track, "You Don't Know Me" featuring Regina Spektor, made it into the Top 30 at Triple A radio. That song and a couple others from the album are streaming at Folds' MySpace page.
"Way to Normal" was produced by Dennis Herring (Elvis Costello, Modest Mouse) and features Folds on vocals and piano with bassist Jared Reynolds and drummer Sam Smith. The musicians played a trick on fans last summer, leaking a fake version of the album on the Internet.
"We wrote completely new songs around the titles," Folds told LiveDaily in an October interview. "The lyrics were written basically in the airport on the airplane on the way from the continent to the UK."
The band then booked a studio, recorded for eight to 10 hours, and mixed, mastered and released the set to the Internet instantly.
"People were very confused," Folds said. "Then fans started figuring out it was bulls---, and then [we got] to see people react."
He added that some of the "fake" songs rival the real tunes on the album. Members of Folds' fan club can get a hold of the joke tracks on a recently released two-disc set dubbed "Way to Normal: Stems and Seeds."
