James Taylor gets under 'Covers' this spring
James Taylor will continue to support his latest Grammy-nominated album, "Covers," with a US road trip this spring.
The iconic singer/songwriter's current schedule has him kicking things off April 23 in Austin, TX, and traveling around the Southeast and Midwest before winding his way back to the Lone Star State in mid-May. Stops include the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and West Palm Beach, FL's SunFest. Details are listed below.
"Covers," which hit stores in September, debuted at No. 4 on The Billboard 200, selling 94,500 units its first week, according to a press release. The set is an American songbook that features classics made famous by artists including Buddy Holly, The Dixie Chicks, The Temptations, Leonard Cohen, George Jones and Eddie Cochran--songs that Taylor has performed live over the years but never recorded. The single "It's Growing" is currently in the Top 20 on the Hot Adult Contemporary chart.
Taylor recorded the album during a 10-day session in his Massachusetts barn-turned-studio. He and his 12-piece Band of Legends improvised the songs on the spot and recorded live. Their efforts have earned Taylor two Grammy nominations: Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Male Pop Vocal for the track "Wichita Lineman."
"Covers" follows "James Taylor's One Man Band," which captures a couple of July '07 performances at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, MA. The CD/DVD collection features new versions of some of the star's biggest hits, including "Carolina In My Mind" and "Fire and Rain," interspersed with his anecdotes on the inspiration for the tunes.
During a career that spans five decades, Taylor has snagged five Grammys and logged sales of more than 40 million albums, according to his bio. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's first greatest-hits package earned him the RIAA's Diamond Award, given for US sales in excess of 10 million.
