Album Chart: Springsteen's 'Dream' works it way to No. 1
After spending seven consecutive weeks--and eight weeks total--at the top of the US album chart, Taylor Swift 's "Fearless" has been ousted, and The Boss has taken over.
"Working on a Dream," the latest album from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, sold 224,000 copies during its first week in stores, enough to debut in the No. 1 slot on The Billboard 200 chart. (Billboard bases its flagship chart on Nielsen SoundScan retail data.) The feat marks Springsteen's ninth album to top the chart, according to Billboard, tying him with The Rolling Stones for the third most No. 1 albums of all time; The Beatles have 19, Elvis Presley and Jay-Z have 10.
Springsteen's chart-topping entry bumps the remaining Top 5 albums down one slot each from last week, with Swift's "Fearless" coming in at a distant second with sales of 55,000 copies, Beyonce 's "I Am ... Sasha Fierce" down to No. 3 on sales of 52,000 copies, Nickelback 's "Dark Horse" down to No. 4 with sales of about 44,000 copies, and Kanye West 's "808s & Heartbreak" down to No. 5 with sales of 33,000 copies.
Meanwhile, rounding out the Top 10 are Rhino Records' "Grammy Nominees 2009" compilation, which debuts at No. 6 after selling a few hundred copies less than West's total; Jamie Foxx 's "Intuition," which climbs one notch to No. 7 on sales of 32,000; Keyshia Cole 's "A Different Me" down two spots to No. 8 on sales of 31,000; Franz Ferdinand 's "Tonight: Franz Ferdinand" debuts at No. 9 after logging first-week sales of 31,000 copies; and Britney Spears ' "Circus" dips three places to No. 10 after selling 28,000 copies.
