STS9 blasts into spring
Psychedelic jam band Sound Tribe Sector 9 has assembled a US spring jaunt that includes multi-night stands across the country.
The outing is set to get under way Feb. 26 with four nights in San Francisco and then travel the West Coast, Midwest and Southeast through late March. Two-night stands are booked in Portland, OR, and Asheville, NC, and a March 19-21 engagement in Athens, GA, will close out the tour. Two of the San Francisco gigs and all three of the Athens shows are sold out, according to STS9's website.
The group also has a few summer festivals on its itinerary, including June's Wakarusa Music Festival in Ozark, AR, and July's "Day Out of Time" celebration in Denver. All dates are included below.
STS9 is supporting last July's Top 10 electronic album, "Peaceblaster," the band's third studio effort in a career dating back to 1999. The songs on the set are said to be inspired by the tension of the times.
"America is this beautiful, incredible place, but it has a dark underbelly," bassist David Murphy said in the group's bio. "And even on Peaceblaster's most ethereal songs, there's a darkness that reflects what's going on in society -- it ain't all bad, but it ain't all good."
"Music measures the temperature of the people," guitarist Hunter Brown added. "Consumerism and the corporate media have taken us all down the path of cynicism, apathy, and nihilism. If the message on the new record is anything, it's to blast that s--t."
Several songs from "Peaceblaster" are streaming at STS9's MySpace page and the full album is included on 1320 Records' online player, which features hours of music from the labels' artists. STS9's own boutique digital label, 1320 is has taken on a host of underground indie artists, including Prefuse 73, Count Bass D, Eliot Lipp and Calmer.
STS9 has also been staying busy on the charity front, donating $150,000 to a host of causes over the past 18 months, according to a press release. A portion of this year's ticket sales will benefit the Make It Right Foundation to build a home in New Orleans.
The five-man outfit, rounded out by percussionist Jeffree Lerner, keyboardist David Phipps and drummer Zach Velmer, has built a sizeable fanbase through relentless touring, and has consistently ranked in the Top 50 on Pollstar's North American touring chart, according to its bio. STS9 has played major festivals from Lollapalooza to Bonnaroo and Fuji Rock to Coachella, and has headlined amphitheatre shows before tens of thousands of fans.
