George Strait to open new Dallas Cowboys stadium
George Strait will headline the opening event at the Dallas Cowboys' new football stadium, team officials have announced.
The country star will be joined at the June 6 opening event for the new 80,000-capacity venue in Arlington, TX, by Reba McEntire , singer/songwriter Blake Shelton and singer/dancer Julianne Hough. Tickets for the show will go on sale Feb. 28.
"I grew up in South Texas and have always been a Dallas Cowboys fan," Strait said in a press release. "I have a lot of great memories from playing the many shows we did at Texas Stadium, as well as watching America's team win their share of Super Bowls. I am very excited about having the opportunity to do the first concert ever in the magnificent new Cowboys stadium and share this momentous occasion with all the incredible country music fans in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area."
In addition to the Dallas-area stadium appearance, Strait kicks off a run of mostly arena shows May 9 in Hidalgo, TX. In all, the singer has 18 dates lined up through late July, an outing that concludes July 25 in Burgettstown, PA. Details are included below.
Strait continues to support last April's "Troubadour," which debuted atop The Billboard 200 and recently scored Grammy nominations for Best Country Album and Best Male Country Performance. The set has spawned hits including "I Saw God Today," which marked Strait's highest-debuting single ever and his 79th Top 10 track on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart.
In a career that spans more than 25 years, Strait holds the record for the most No. 1 hits on the Hot Country Songs chart, and he currently has 56 chart toppers to his credit, according to a press release. The performer has sold more than 67 million records, garnering 32 platinum or multi-platinum certifications.
In April, Strait will be honored with the Academy of Country Music's Artist of the Decade award in recognition of his record-breaking career.
