Wilco heads out with new DVD
Grammy-winning alt-rockers Wilco have assembled a slate of April performances to coincide with the release of their new concert DVD, "Ashes of American Flags."
The band will kick things off April 14 with a two-night stand in Milwaukee and stop by a handful of cities around the Midwest and Southeast before wrapping with an April 25 gig at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Wilco has also mapped a May/June tour of Spain and Portugal, and will return stateside for June's Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN, and July's 10,000 Lakes Festival in Detroit Lakes, MN. US dates are listed below and those overseas can be found at Wilco's website.
The Chicago-based act, lead by singer/guitarist Jeff Tweedy, is premiering "Ashes of American Flags" at film festivals in San Francisco and Chicago over the next couple of weeks. The DVD will be released to independent retailers April 18 as part of national Record Store Day, and a wide release will follow April 28.
"My introduction to a lot of great music and to the 'music business' came from hanging around and eventually working at independent record stores in Belleville, IL, and St. Louis many years back," Tweedy said in a statement. "It's the life I know. Nothing beats browsing in your favorite store, listening to music, finding something new or old that you've been searching for, being ignored by the store clerks, all that. And without these stores, there's just no way Wilco would still be around."
"Ashes of American Flags" was produced and directed by Christoph Green and Fugazi's Brendan Canty, and shot in five quintessentially American venues: Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, OK; Tipitina's in New Orleans; The Mobile Civic Center in Alabama; the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville; and the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. The film mixes live concert footage with band interviews, taking the viewer behind the scenes of Wilco's 2008 US tour.
"It is really interesting to me how the experience of watching the live performances changes when the songs are given geographical, personal and historical contexts," Green said in a press release. "We wanted to make a tour film that would deepen and change the viewer's relationship with the music."
The members of Wilco have told various media outlets they are working on their seventh studio album, which could be released as early as this spring. Their latest studio effort, 2007's "Sky Blue Sky," entered The Billboard 200 at No. 4, Wilco's highest debut ever. That set helped the band score its fourth Grammy nomination, with a nod in the Best Rock Album category.
Wilco's previous record, 2004's "A Ghost is Born," took home two Grammy honors: Best Alternative Music Album and Best Recording Package.
