Chris Brown [ tickets ] has been charged with two felonies--assault likely to cause great bodily injury and making criminal threats--in response to the alleged brutal abuse of girlfriend, fellow R&B singer Rihanna.

The 19-year-old Brown, who was arrested Feb. 8 after an alleged altercation with the "Umbrella" singer, appeared in a Los Angeles court Thursday (3/5) to hear the charges against him. A judge granted Brown's lawyer's request to delay Brown's arraignment until next month, and ordered Brown "not to annoy, harass, molest, threaten or use force or violence against anyone" while free on $50,000 bail.

When asked by the judge if there was a "no contact order" in place preventing Brown from contacting Rihanna, her attorney reportedly said she was not requesting such an order.

According to a police detective's affidavit, an argument ensued between Brown and Rihanna shortly after midnight on Feb. 8 after Rihanna found a text message from another woman on Brown's cell phone. He then is alleged to have pounded her head against the passenger window, punched her repeatedly with his right fist, causing her "mouth to fill with blood and blood to spatter all over her clothing and the interior of the vehicle," according to the affidavit.

Brown also is alleged to have bitten her and to have attempted to render her unconscious by grabbing her in a headlock and "applying pressure to her left and right carotid arteries causing her to be unable able to breath," the affidavit said.

The document, which goes into more detail about the physical attack, was filed as part of a search warrant requesting the phone records of Brown, Rihanna and her assistant. In addition to detailing the alleged physical assault, the affidavit claims that Brown threatened to kill Rihanna.

Rihanna's spokesperson did not comment on the charges; Brown issued a statement not long after the incident stating he was "sorry and saddened" that it occurred, and reportedly committed to anger-management lessons. Both stars cancelled their appearances at the Grammy Awards February 9.

Despite the alleged incident and ongoing legal matters, Brown and Rihanna reportedly reconciled last weekend during a stay at Miami-area house owned by Sean "Diddy" Combs.
