Reggae Tribute To The Police
A choice group of Jamaican and American artists have come together to record overtly reggae versions of Police songs, according to a press release.
"Spirits In The Material World: A Reggae Tribute To The Police," due out Feb. 19, features reggae heavyweights Toots & The Maytals, Junior Reed, Inner Circle, Lee "Scratch" Perry and Gregory Isaacs. The CD also includes songs by Joan Osborne, The Wailing Souls and Ali Campbell of UB40, in addition to young acts such as Pepper, the popular Hawaiian band that meshes high-energy punk rock with reggae--creating a sound that is often compared to The Police and Sublime.
A portion of the proceeds from "Spirits In The Material World" will benefit The Toots Foundation, which was founded by Toots Hibbert to build and run youth centers in Jamaica. Shanachie Records GM Randall Grass said he was inspired to record a reggae tribute to The Police when he heard about the band's reunion in early 2007.
