SXSW Performer: My Morning Jacket (Louisville, KY)

Kentucky's My Morning Jacket makes Southern Rock for people who don't care very much for Southern Rock. The band, led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Jim James, effortlessly mixes sprawling, anthemic jams with hard-charging indie rave-ups and tender ballads, mashing up genres right before your eyes. James' richly textured vocals are both instantly familiar and shockingly original, and the music drapes over the words like a well worn, er, jacket. "I like to think of the band as something that's not really about any one person or any one thing," James says in the group's online bio. "It's just this weird cloud that is all-encompassing in terms of what we all do to it."

Performing Thursday, March 13 at 11 p.m. at Austin Music Hall (208 Nueces St.).
