Jeff Beck Sets Late Summer Tour Schedule
Bob Grossweiner and Jane Cohen report: On the heels of a successful spring club / theater tour, acclaimed guitar wizard Jeff Beck will make another pass at the U.S. on a 31-city North American run of amphitheaters, arenas, theaters and clubs. Lending support on select dates is 18-year-old guitar wunderkind Jonny Lang.
Beck kicks off the tour Aug. 13 at the Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville, Tenn., and winds down the North American leg on Sept. 28 in Denver. The tour's Beck-only dates will focus on larger clubs and theatres, while those packaged with Lang will move into arenas and amphitheatres.
Lang's fourteen dates on the tour follow his European run of jazz and blues festival shows from July 6th to August 7th.
The tour supports Beck's latest release Who Else!, which has not garnered much attention at radio or significantly charted since its March debut. Beck's touring band includes guitarist Jennifer Batten, who has toured with Michael Jackson; drummer Steve Alexander and bassist Randy Hope-Taylor.
In May, Beck pulled out of an announced performance slot on the 1999 Woodstock stage, citing scheduling conflicts due to European tour committments. Ironically, the splintering of the Jeff Beck Group in the days before the original Woodstock festival in 1969 kept Beck from participating then as well. Woodstock organizer John Scher has said that if a 35th anniversary Woodstock event is produced in 2004, Beck will be invited back again.
Lang skyrocketed to fame as a teen blues virtuoso following the release of his debut LP Lie To Me, at the age of 15 in 1997. In recent years, he's toured with Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones and B.B. King. His late '98 effort Wander This World holds the # 2 position on the Billboard blues chart after 35 weeks of release.
