Emmylou Harris Plans Tour Behind ‘Red Dirt Girl’
Harris, who is currently in the final days of a European tour, is scheduled to open her North American outing with three nights at Joe’s Pub in New York City on Sept. 18-20. She will return to New York to play a gig at the much larger Beacon Theater on Oct. 19.
The new album is Harris’ first solo album since 1995’s “Wrecking Ball,” but she has kept busy by touring with her band Spyboy and guesting on several high-profile releases, including Willie Nelson’s “Teatro” and a “Trio” reunion album with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt. Harris also sings a track on the debut album by Dusty Trails, the new band of ex-Luscious Jackson keyboardist Vivian Trimble and ex-Breeders bassist Josephine Wiggs.
Harris wrote 11 of the 12 songs on “Red Dirt Girl,” which features guest vocals from Dave Matthews , Patty Griffin and Patti Scialfa, among others.
For the second straight year, Harris has gathered a line-up of top singer-songwriters to accompany her in a series of five concerts to benefit the non-profit Campaign for a Landmine Free World. Steve Earle, Bruce Cockburn, Nanci Griffith, Mary Chapin Carpenter and John Prine--all of whom appeared on at least part of last year's tour--have been enlisted for this year's concerts, all of which will take place in the northeastern U.S. and in Canada.
Harris is scheduled to tape a segment for the PBS program Austin City Limits in September.
