U.K. Charts: Madonna Scores Tenth No. 1 U.K. Single
LONDON--Madonna won the battle for the top spot on the Official U.K. Singles Chart on Sunday (8/27) as "Music" went straight in at No. 1, her tenth No. 1 single in the U.K. The title track of her upcoming LP knocked Italian DJ Spiller and vocalist Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s popular Ibiza anthem "Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)" down to No. 2 after just one week.
Posh Spice Victoria Beckham’s first solo EP "Out of Your Mind," with Dane Bowers and dance group True Steppers, also fell one place to No. 3. Robbie Williams’ "Rock DJ" slipped from No. 3 to No. 4, Melanie C’s "I Turn to You" fell from No. 4 to No. 5 and Britney Spears’ "Lucky" fell from No. 5 to No. 6.
Other new entries in the singles chart included pop duo Daphne & Celeste’s cover of Alice Cooper’s "School’s Out," which debuted at No.12, Bloodhound Gang’s "The Ballad of Chasey Lain" at No. 15 and Underworld’s "Cowgirl" at No. 24.
Teen soul singer Craig David held onto the No. 1 spot on the Official U.K. Album chart for a second week in a row with "Born to Do It." His platinum debut album kept Ronan Keating’s double-platinum "Ronan" in check at No. 2 and The Corrs’ platinum "In Blue" at No. 3.
The biggest jump in the Top 25 albums was Spice Girl Melanie C’s "Northern Star," up from No. 17 to No. 4. The highest new entry this week was guitar band Reef’s "Getaway" at No. 15.
Downward moves in the Top 10 included Eminem’s "The Marshall Mathers LP" falling from No. 4 to No. 5, Whitney Houston falling from No. 5 to No. 8 and Coldplay falling from No. 7 to No. 10.
