Gov't Mule, Ex-Allman Brothers Band Bassist Allen Woody Dead At 44
Woody’s body was discovered in his room at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel in East Elmhurst--near New York’s LaGuardia Airport--by a hotel chambermaid, according to New York City Police Detective Walter Burnes. There were “no visible signs of trauma,” Burnes said. A medical examiner is conducting an investigation to determine the cause of death, and results of a toxicology report will be available in about a week, Burnes added.
An initial autopsy performed on Sunday (8/27) was “inconclusive,” according to a statement released by Gov’t Mule’s record label Capricorn Records.
Woody was apparently scheduled to take an early morning flight from New York to his home state of Tennessee, according to the official Gov’t Mule website.
Gov’t Mule--founded by Woody and fellow former Allman Brothers member Warren Haynes--was scheduled to begin a headlining tour in Englewood, Colo., on Sept. 14. The group had also landed the opening slot for nine November dates on Ben Harper’s U.S. tour. Harper, during the encore at his Sunday night (8/27) performance in San Francisco, dedicated the song “In the Lord’s Arms Now” to Woody, according to the Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals’ official website.
The late bassist joined the Allman Brothers Band in 1989. He and Haynes--along with drummer Matt Abts--formed Gov’t Mule as a side project in 1994, and ultimately left the Allman Brothers to dedicate themselves to the project. The group’s latest album, “Life Before Insanity,” was released earlier this year.
Woody is survived by his wife, Jenny, their 3-year-old daughter, Savannah, and his father, Douglas Allen Woody, Sr., according to Capricorn Records. A notice posted on the Gov’t Mule website asks that donations be sent in lieu of flowers to: Savannah Woody Educational Fund, c/o Hard Head Management, PO Box 651, Village Station, New York, N.Y., 10014.
