David Gilmour Readies Live Release
David Gilmour will release a double live album plus concert DVD, "David Gilmour Live in Gdansk," Sept. 16. The recording is the first live solo album from the Pink Floyd singer/guitarist.
The CD/DVD was recorded on Aug. 26, 2006, the final stop of Gilmour's "On An Island" tour. The concert, titled "It Started in Gdansk-The Space of Freedom," marked the 26th anniversary of the founding of Trade Union Solidarity, which also is a National holiday for the Polish people, according to a press release.
Gilmour's six piece band--for the only time on the tour--was accompanied by an orchestra: the 40-piece string section of the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Zbigniew Preisner; Preisner was the orchestral arranger on Gilmour's "On An Island" album. In addition to his solo work, Gilmour performed the first ever live recording with an orchestra of Pink Floyd's "High Hopes" and "A Great Day For Freedom."
The DVD, which features 113 minutes of concert footage, also includes a 36-minute documentary that includes a private meeting between Gilmour and former President Lech Walesa. Among the DVD's other features are behind the scenes concert conversations and rehearsals and a wreath-laying with Walesa at the Memorial to the shipyard workers killed in the 1970 uprising.
"David Gilmour Live in Gdansk" will be available in several formats including double CD, double CD plus DVD, double CD plus double DVD and a five LP vinyl box set. The different configurations feature a variety of extras including collectible memorabilia, a 12- or 24-page booklet, a web-pass for downloadable content and extra tracks including private recording sessions known as the "Barn Jams." More information can be found at Gilmour's website.
