Depeche Mode eyes 2009 return
Depeche Mode has begun laying the groundwork for a busy 2009 that will see the alt-pop icons dish out a new album and mount a world tour in support of the set.
The band has nailed down an April 20 release date for the as-yet-untitled album, and has rolled out the dates for the European leg of the upcoming roadtrip. Dubbed the "Tour of the Universe 2009," the outing is scheduled to launch May 10 in Tel Aviv, Israel. The band was originally scheduled to close out its 2006 "Playing the Angel" tour in Tel Aviv, but was forced to cancel that gig due to the military conflict in the region.
The forthcoming album will Depeche Mode's first US release on EMI/Mute Records; the Euro-based band recently renewed its long-term deal with EMI/Mute, and that company will now handle the group's stateside distribution, which previously was handled by Warner Bros. Records.
The group announced its album and touring plans during a Monday (10/6) press conference in Berlin. Streaming video of the event is available on demand via LiveNation's website.
