June Carter Cash Follows Johnny Cash Tribute With Own Show
On the heels of a standout performance on the recent Johnny Cash tribute special on TNT, Cash's wife June Carter Cash will perform a rare club show in Los Angeles as part of a whirlwind promotional tour for her first album in 25 years, Press On. Sources close to the event have noted that Johnny Cash is expected to attend the May 27th show at the 450-capacity Troubador in West Hollywood, CA, and will likely join his wife on stage.
The Carter Cash album features a duet with Johnny Cash on the track Far Side Banks Of Jordan and performances by Marty Stuart and Rodney Crowell (both ex sons-in-law of the Cash family).
The album also features a new rendition of Ring Of Fire, a hit for Johnny Cash in 1963 that was actually written by Carter Cash to reflect her dread over initially falling in love with Cash, whom she married in 1968 after saving Cash from a near-death bout with drug addiction.
Together, the couple has won a pair of Grammy awards, for the singles Jackson and If I Were A Carpenter.
Cash has rarely been seen in public since being diagnosed in 1998 with Shy Drager Syndrome, a disorder similar to Parkinson's Disease.
Just before going public with his illness, however, Cash rattled the cages of the music industry and drew strong support from fellow country music veterans George Jones and Willie Nelson for a full-page ad he purchased in Billboard magazine after his Grammy win for 1997's Unchained, which despite critical acclaim, was altogether ignored by country radio.
The ad read, ''American Recordings and Johnny Cash would like to acknowledge the Nashville music establishment and country radio for your support,'' and was accompanied by a 1970 photo of Cash flipping the bird to the camera with an angry expression on his face.
The broadcast of TNT's ''All-Star Tribute To Johnny Cash'' featured performances by Carter Cash singing Ring Of Fire, as well as Cash songs performed by Bob Dylan, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Trisha Yearwood, Kris Kristofferson, Dave Matthews and others. TNT reports that the special was the most-watched cable concert premiere of the year, drawing over 10 million viewers.
