Merle Haggard sues the Green Train
Merle Haggard has filed a lawsuit in Nashville against the World Freedom Train, Inc., (also known as the Green Train) and its founder Robert K. Wolf, alleging the organization represents itself as a non-profit educational organization dedicated to protecting the environment even though the Internal Revenue Service has not recognized it as such, according to a press release.
According to the suit, defendants have used misleading and illegal tactics to raise contributions in Haggard's name and have repeatedly forged his signature, including on so-called "personal" letters to the country star's music-industry colleagues.
The suit also claims that the defendants greatly exaggerated the limited support that Haggard gave to the organization--repeatedly misstating that he was personally involved in running its operations.
The country-music legend claims his name and identity were used for the personal purposes of the organization's founder.
The suit also alleges that the Green Train raised contributions without being qualified to do so in the State of Tennessee.
The suit asks the Court to order the Green Train and Wolf to immediately stop using Haggard's name and likeness in connection with the project and asks that they be ordered to account for all monies raised in his name. The Court also will be asked to prohibit the defendants from keeping contributions illegally raised in Haggard's name without making full and complete disclosure of all relevant facts to the Green Train's donors.
