John Doe and The Sadies ready album of covers, originals

John Doe and The Sadies have recorded an album of classic country covers and originals that will be released April 14. Among the covers are songs made famous by a range of artists from Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Bobby Bare to Merle Haggard, Porter Wagoner and Ray Price.

The sound of the album, "Country Club," is described as a mix of traditional Nashville country music with the electric honky-tonk of Bakersfield, CA, according to a press release. "What was called 'Countrypolitan' always seemed one of the coolest hybrids of country music," Doe said in a statement. "But we agreed quickly and completely that there were going to be no string sections, horns or choirs. Bakersfield vs. Nashville was never a dispute ... Bakersfield!"

The Sadies and Doe cover classic tunes on the new release, including "Take These Chains from My Heart" by Hank Williams, "Are the Good Times Really Over for Good" by Haggard and "Stop the World and Let Me Off" by Waylon Jennings. The album also features "late-night" ballads by Tammy Wynette ("'Til I Get It Right") and Roger Miller ("Husbands and Wives"), among others.

Three of the album's original songs were written by The Sadies and one was written by Doe and his X partner Exene Cervenka.
