Sonic Youth heads into summer with new release

Sonic Youth will release a new album, "The Eternal," June 9, according to a statement on the Matador Records website. The recording, produced by John Agnello and the band, will be SY's 16th album.

"We've not had a record in our recent history that's been the subject of nearly as much speculation and anticipation, Matador's Gerard Cosloy said in the statement. "Suffice to say, we're pretty amazed at the way the band delivered something this neoteric while still sounding like, well, themselves. Less of a reinvention and perhaps more to do with a particularly awesome dozen songs."

Matador is expected to shortly announced a "Buy Early Get Now" scheme for the album with as-yet-announced bonus material.

Sonic Youth's upcoming tour plans include April shows in Austria and Germany. The band also will perform May 16 at the No Fun Festival in Brooklyn. Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon and bandmates also expect to be touring throughout the summer in support of "The Eternal."
