The Welsh singer's album, "Rockferry," was Britain's top-selling release of 2008, with worldwide sales close to five million.

Grammy-winning rockers Coldplay [ tickets ], which performed "Viva La Vida" at the ceremony, were nominated for four Brits but went home empty-handed. The band was beat out by Elbow [ tickets ] in the British Group category and by Iron Maiden [ tickets ] for best British Live Act.

In addition to Iron Maiden, another well established act, Paul Weller [ tickets ], was a big winner, leaving the ceremony with the British Male Solo award.

In the international categories, Kings of Leon [ tickets ] took home both the International Group and International Album awards. Katy Perry [ tickets ] was named Best International Female and Kanye West [ tickets ] took the male counterpart award.

Florence and the Machine [ tickets ] won the Critics' Choice Award and the Pet Shop Boys [ tickets ] were awarded a Brit for Outstanding Contribution to Music.
