SXSW Review: The Crystal Method at La Zona Rosa
Maybe it was because I didn't have any glowsticks. Maybe it was because I didn't consume any rave-friendly substances. Maybe it was because I'm almost 40. Whatever the case, The Crystal Method 's Saturday night (3/21) performance at La Zona Rosa was wasted on me.
Were they effective at getting the crowd excited? Absolutely. Did the packed house of sweaty fans throw their hands in the air and wave them like they just didn't care? Most definitely.
Without a doubt, Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan--a.k.a. The Crystal Method--kicked out the jams, and any devotees of either TCM, or house music in general, or both, almost surely were pleased with the duo's 45-minute set.
And if there were any DJs in the audience who were close enough to the stage to see, I bet they could heap praise upon Kirkland and Jordan for their technical prowess.
But to this average schlub, all I saw was two guys standing behind a table, taking turns playing pre-recorded music. Yes, I'm quite certain that there was much more to it than that, but, from a live-music perspective, the performance was sorely lacking in the can't-get-this-anywhere-else feel of seeing a band and/or singer show off their skills in a concert setting.
