Bruce Springsteen warms up Jersey fans
Bruce Springsteen held something of a pre-tour "open house" for New Jersey fans this week, showcasing some possible song selections for the first leg of the tour, and unveiling new E Street Band fill-in drummer Jay Weinberg.
While using much of the set during two sold-out shows at Asbury Park's Convention Hall to showcase new songs from his latest release, "Working On A Dream," Springsteen dusted off material that spoke to joblessness and financial hardship going back to the Reagan era with "Seeds," "Johnny 99" and "Darlington County" on night number two, according to published reports.
Springsteen reached even farther back on the first night, pulling in Woody Guthrie's "I Ain't Got No Home" from the mid-20th century and Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More" from the mid-19th century, both adding to the "hard times" theme that Springsteen seems to be building the show on.
Reports on both LiveDaily's Springsteen forum and at Backstreets.com offered mixed reviews of how Springsteen's latest material fared before a live audience, though that's no indication that the songs and setlist sequencing won't gel before Springsteen and band take the stage at the first official stop of the tour April 1 in San Jose, CA.
LiveDaily will be live-Twittering the opening night setlist from the HP Pavilion as it happens and reviewing the show.
Weinberg, the son of longtime E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg, will fill in for dad while Max juggles responsibilities with his day gig, fronting the Max Weinberg 7, house band for Conan O'Brien's late night show.
O'Brien recently ended his stint as host of NBC's "Late Night" and is preparing to take over as host of "The Tonight Show" from current host Jay Leno on June 1, which coincides with the launch of the European leg of Springsteen's upcoming tour.
