Neil Young's 'Archives' scheduled for early summer release
Neil Young 's upcoming "Archives Volume 1 1963-1972" is set for a June 2 release. The multi-disc collection will be available in three different formats: Blu-ray, DVD and CD, according to a press release.
Volume one of "Archives" features 10 discs in the Blu-ray and DVD configurations, while the CD edition is comprised of eight. An interactive-timeline feature allows the viewer to follow the entire life of the singer-songwriter, starting with his high school band the Squires. The collection also features images of never before seen memorabilia, handwritten lyrics, letters and other historical documents.
The Blu-ray and DVD editions will be sold in a custom display box that houses a 236-page full-color hardbound book featuring additional archival materials, a tapes database, detailed descriptions of the music and artwork, a foldout "Archives" poster, a custom keeper for the 10-sleeved discs and more. The CD edition will be sold in a custom disc keeper with a descriptive booklet.
The "Archives" series recently was discussed by Jim DeRogatis of the Chicago Sun-Times after he heard and viewed the release in Austin at South by Southwest. "Not only is it absolutely amazing, it quite possibly is a model for the only kind of recorded product that independent and chain stores alike will still be selling in the post-CD future," DeRogatis said in a statement.
Pre-orders, which are being taken at Young's website, will include a free preview version (called Disc 0) to be sent out before the June 2 release date, along with an exclusive 7" single of the early songs "Aurora" and "Mustang."
Young's "Archives" is an ongoing series that will continue through his entire career, and as new developments occur, they are expected to be incorporated into future volumes.
