Green Day's 'American Idiot' becomes rock musical
Green Day has teamed up with Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer to bring 2004's "American Idiot" to a Berkeley, CA, theater this fall.
Billie Joe Armstrong, frontman for the punk-inspired rockers, has turned his lyrics from the band's seventh CD into a theatrical story that will grace the stage at Berkeley's Roda Theatre Sept. 4 through Oct. 11. Tickets for the performance are available now at the venue's website.
Performed by the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, a Tony Award-winning playhouse, the rock musical "follows working-class characters from the suburbs to the city to the Middle East, as they seek redemption in a world filled with frustration," according to a press release.
"Who would have thought that one of the most brutally honest, eloquent, passionate, funny, and poetic theatrical responses to the post 9-11 world would be a Green Day record?" director Michael Mayer released in a statement. "This work of passion and vision and fierce intelligence seemed to me like the heartbeat of a generation of Americans who were fed up."
Mayer also produced the Broadway smash "Spring Awakening," featuring music by Duncan Sheik.
"American Idiot" will include every song from the 2004 album set into motion by award-winning choreographer Steven Hoggett, along with several tracks from the band's upcoming release, "21st Century Breakdown." The new studio effort is scheduled to hit shelves May 15, and will be followed up with a world tour, according to the band's website.
