Allman Brothers Band expands 40th anniversary trek
The Allman Brothers Band has added a new leg to its 40th anniversary outing, mapping dates with Widespread Panic through the summer and fall months.
The band, which just finished off its annual Beacon Theatre residency in New York City, will hit the West Coast for the first time in four years when the first leg of the "40 Years of Highs & Lows" tour kicks off May 12 and 13 in Oakland, CA. The veteran southern rockers will hit seven cities in the West--many of them with The Doobie Brothers in tow--before heading back to the opposite coast late in the month for an appearance at the May 31 Mountain Jam Festival in Hunter, NY.
The new leg with jam-rockers Widespread Panic gets underway Aug. 21 in Camden, NJ, and runs through mid-October, with the two outfits scheduled to hit 15 cities on the late-summer/early fall trek. Details are included below.
The Allman Brothers Band's 15-night NYC residency featured a hefty roster of guest artists making cameo appearances and sitting in with the group, including Eric Clapton, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh of The Dead, Trey Anastasio and Page McConnell of Phish, Sheryl Crow, Kid Rock, Bruce Hornsby, Billy Gibbons, Levon Helm, and John Bell and Jimmy Herring of Widespread Panic, among others.
The shows marked a return to the Beacon Theatre after the group was forced to scrap its annual residency last year so that vocalist/keyboardist Gregg Allman could recuperate from treatments for Hepatitis C. The singer recovered enough for the band to embark on a late-summer concert run that extended into last fall.
"I feel great," Allman said in a statement at the time. "We did about 20 shows this summer and we were really hitting it."
