The Color Fred hits the virtual highway

The Color Fred will kick-off the upcoming release of "The Intervention" EP with a virtual tour April 12 that will feature five exclusive and intimate acoustic performances spread out on five different websites and portals, according to a press release.

Singer/songwriter Fred Mascherino will debut one video at each "tour stop": AltPress.com, MySpace, AOL, Peta2 and Shockhound. The virtual outing begins at the band's MySpace page, where a corresponding blog will offer a "road map" with links to the different stops on the tour.

Mascherino, known previously for his work with Taking Back Sunday, will release the new EP on National Record Store Day, April 18. The EP, which features acoustic versions of new and previously released songs as well as never-before released basement demos, was recorded specifically for this year's celebration of indie record stores.

"I want to remind everyone out there that independent record stores still exist," Mascherino said in a statement. "[The EP] won't be available at Best Buy, Target or any of the major retailers. It'll only be available at indie retail stores. It's my way of supporting indie stores since they've always supported me."

The Color Fred will mark the April 18 release with an in-store at Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ, at 1:00 p.m.
