New Releases, Sept. 26: 98 Degrees, Pearl Jam, Bowie, more
98 Degrees returns to the fold this week with the release of “Revelation” (Universal). The disc is the follow-up to the popular boy band’s holiday album “This Christmas,” which was released last October. The group’s 1998 sophomore album “98 Degrees and Rising,” meanwhile, was certified quadruple-platinum in January for sales of over four million copies.
"Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)," the first single from “Revelation,” currently sits at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, up from its No. 19 spot last week. To launch the new album, the group is scheduled to appear on Tuesday (9/26) on MTV’s "Total Request Live," followed by a record-signing at the Virgin Megastore in New York City’s Times Square.
Pearl Jam floods the market this week by simultaneously releasing 25 official bootleg CDs that were recorded during its European tour earlier this year. A 2-CD set representing each of the stops on the European tour will be released, with the exception of the tragic concert at the Roskilde festival in Denmark, where nine concertgoers died in a crowd crush during the band’s set.
The CDs have been available for several weeks exclusively through the band’s official website, but are now being offered in record stores. Pearl Jam has said in a number of reports that its intention in releasing the discs is to allow its bootleg-buying fan base to obtain high-quality recordings for reasonable prices, thereby cutting off illegal bootleggers who sell poor-quality concert CDs.
The band-sanctioned Rumor Pit website has said that similar releases from the band’s current North American tour are also planned.
David Bowie fans can pick up the Duke’s new “Bowie at the Beeb” (Virgin) this week. Though not as voluminous as Pearl Jam’s 25-album offering, the three-CD “Bowie at the Beeb” set offers plenty of tracks, all of which were recorded during performances for the BBC. The first two discs feature cuts from Bowie’s 1968-1972 BBC performances, while disc 3 was culled from his BBC performance in August of this year.
Soulfly, founded by former Sepultura frontman Max Cavalera, follows its stint on this summer's Ozzfest tour with the release of “Primitive” (Roadrunner). The group set out on a headlining club tour of its own on Sunday (9/24).
Ratdog, a side project of the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir since before Jerry Garcia died, releases "Evening Moods" (Arista) this week, its first CD. Weir just completed his stint on this year’s Furthur Festival, and is set to hit the tour trail with Ratdog next month.
