Wilco nears completion of new album, adds summer dates
After putting the finishing touches on a new studio LP, Wilco has added new dates to the band's summer concert calendar.
The Chicago-based group, which kicks off a slate of spring dates tonight (4/14) in Milwaukee, WI, will tackle a short Western US excursion following the band's June 13 slot at Manchester, TN's Bonnaroo. The latest confirmed stretch of shows begins June 17 in El Paso, TX, and highlights of the seven-city outing include two nights (6/22-23) in Los Angeles and a June 27 show in Berkeley, CA's Greek Theatre. Details are included below.
On the current trek, the band is promoting a new concert DVD, "Ashes of American Flags," which will be released to independent retailers this weekend as part of national Record Store Day, with a wider release coming April 28.
The film, which mixes concert footage with interviews, was produced and directed by Christoph Green and Fugazi's Brendan Canty, and shot in five US venues: Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, OK; Tipitina's in New Orleans; The Mobile Civic Center in Alabama; the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville; and the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC.
Wilco recently announced on its website that it is nearing completion of a new studio album, the follow-up to 2007's "Sky Blue Sky," which entered The Billboard 200 at No. 4, Wilco's highest debut ever. That set helped the band score its fourth Grammy nomination, with a nod in the Best Rock Album category.
Last summer, Wilco main man Jeff Tweedy told Billboard that the still-untitled new album, which the band expects to release in June on the Nonesuch label, would feature a more studio-groomed sound than "Sky Blue Sky," and that the band will "allow ourselves a little bit more leeway in terms of sculpting the sound in the studio and doing overdubs and using the studio as another instrument. Last time around, it was more of a document."
