Levon Helm returns with new solo effort
Levon Helm will release his second solo album, "Electric Dirt," June 30, according to a press release.
On this album, Helm once again chose to work with Larry Campbell, who took the reigns as producer of Helm's 2007 Grammy-award winning "Dirt Farmer."
The new release kicks off with Helm's rendition of The Grateful Dead's "Tennessee Jed," moving on to a stripped down version of Happy Traum's "Golden Bird." The album also includes the Randy Newman-penned "Kingfish," which brings the swagger of New Orleans to the forefront with rousing horn arrangements by Allen Toussaint and the Levon Helm Band, according to a statement posted on Helm's website.
Helm, who is best known for his work with The Band, was named the 2008 "Artist of the Year" by the Americana Music Association. The previous year, the San Francisco Chronicle said "Dirt Farmer," which was Helm's first solo recording in 25 years, was "nothing less than a return to form by one of the most soulful vocalists in rock history."
