Under label pressure, Offspring rescinds free CD plan

Columbia Records has scuttled the Offspring 's plans to make their forthcoming album "Conspiracy of One" available for free download from the band's official website.

According to the terms of the new agreement, the single "Original Prankster" will be made available at the Southern California punk band's official website beginning on Sept. 29. The $1,000,000 sweepstakes giveaway announced with the original plans for the album's release will still take place, with the winner announced on Nov. 14, the day of the LP's release.

A Columbia Records spokesperson said in a press release, "We are extremely happy that Sony Music has worked out a solution with the Offspring and its management that supports the integrity of the band's creative idea and enables them to proceed with their promotion."

Repeated calls to Offspring manager Jim Guerinot were not returned by press time.

According to a Los Angeles Times report, the band lobbied Columbia Records' parent Sony Music in 1998 for permission to distribute the single "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)" from that year's "Americana" for free online, but backed down when the label voiced opposition.

Fans, however, traded the track online in short order upon its release and, according to Wired magazine, the song was downloaded 22 million times in 10 weeks. Despite the MP3 trading, more than 10 million copies of "Americana" were sold, the magazine said.
