Green Day plays surprise shows ahead of new album

Green Day gave fans an early look at its forthcoming new album--the band's first in five years--during a series of hastily announced California club shows over the last week.

The band's latest surprise performance took place Wednesday night (4/15) at the tiny Uptown club in Oakland, CA, one night after the band performed across the street at the much-larger Fox Theatre before a sold-out crowd that had received only a few hours of advance notice that there would be a show.

Tickets for the Tuesday night show sold out within an hour of the announcement, which was posted at the band's website at 5 pm PST.

The group also made a pair of earlier "unscheduled" San Francisco appearances the previous week. Barring any further surprises, Green Day will next hit the stage next month, when the band travels to New York City for a May 18 show at the Beacon Theatre, according to Billboard.

"Know Your Enemy," the first single from the soon-to-be released new album, arrived at radio stations Thursday (4/16), 10 days after fans got a sneak preview when a 90-second snippet of the tune was used as the opening tease of CBS Sports' 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship Game.

On April 24, MTV, VH1 and affiliate networks and websites will debut the music video for "Know Your Enemy," which was directed by Matthew Cullen of Motion Theory. The massive rollout will make the clip the first global cross-channel video premiere for the network, according to a press release.

"21st Century Breakdown," produced by Butch Vig, is Green Day's eighth studio album, and its first studio release since 2004's Grammy Award-winning punk-rock opera "American Idiot," which debuted at No. 1 on the charts, spawned five hit singles and went on to sell more than 12 million copies worldwide. The new set is due in stores May 15.
