Pixies unveil details for 'Minotaur' box set
The Pixies have confirmed rumors of a band development, though the excitement comes in the form of a collector's edition box set of the iconic alt-rockers' five albums and not a brand-new studio release as many anticipated.
Dubbed "Minotaur," the collection will come in two configurations: a deluxe edition ($175) and a limited edition ($450), both available for pre-order beginning June 15 at the Artist in Residence website.
The deluxe set will include all five of the band's studio albums--1987's "Come On Pilgrim," 1988's "Surfer Rosa," 1989's "Doolittle," 1990's "Bossanova" and 1991's "Trompe le Monde"--on 24k layered CD and Blu-Ray discs, a DVD and Blu-Ray featuring the group's 1991 performance at London's Brixton Academy, a 54-page book of artwork by art director Vaughan Oliver and photographer Simon Larbalestier and all of the band's videos on DVD and Blu-Ray.
Die-hard fans of the alt-rock pioneers can splurge on the limited-edition "Minotaur," which, along with everything in the deluxe collection, also includes all five albums on 180-gram vinyl, a Giclee print of Oliver's work and a 72-page hardcover book of the project artwork by Oliver and Larbalestier.
Oliver directed the art for the Pixies five studio sets and Larbalestier shot all the photographs. The former is now an art professor in the UK and is working with his students to create an entirely new package of artwork for the collector's sets. He felt it only appropriate to bring Larbalestier on board for the project.
"Just from looking at his own personal work, his own personal aesthetic," Oliver said in video press release available on the A+R website, "I think of him as a fifth Pixie, if you like."
The Pixies--singer/guitarist Black Francis, guitarist Joey Santiago, bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering--formed in Boston in 1986 and released five studio albums before disbanding in 1992. The alt-rockers reunite on occasion for sporadic one-off performances. The group is currently slated to stop by the Where the Action Is Festival in Stockholm, Sweden June 12 and close out the Isle of Wight Festival in the UK June 14.
