BBMak aims to escape the boy band mold
The Manchester, England-based band BBMak is well aware that it just may be considered "another boy band." After all, "Sooner or Later," its American debut, is chock full of love songs and tight harmonies.
"When we walk on stage, you really don't know what to think. When we start playing, we get a lot of people on our side," said Mark Barry, the acoustic guitar-playing singer.
"We get a lot of respect from older people as well. ... We're really passionate in our music and I think it stands out. I think our fans can see that, too."
The band--Barry, Christian Burns and Ste (short for Steven) McNally--took a do-it-yourself approach to getting signed. Instead of sending out a slew of tapes hoping to ink a deal, the trio camped out outside of record company offices and played.
"We busked until we got someone's attention. And we got enough attention to create a bit of a buzz in the industry," Burns said.
Eventually signing with Disney-owned Hollywood Records, BBMak has continued that buzz. When the first single, the acoustic-driven, addictive "Back Here" hit radio, it seemingly never left.
"So many people are sick of that song," he said with a laugh. "That's a good thing. That's a good thing. We thought it was going to take time. It was quite strange. It did seem like overnight. All of a sudden we were getting recognized. Fans started asking for autographs. Since we've gone on the Britney Spears tour, everything changed from that. We had some amazing, amazing gigs with her--like 20,000 at a time."
BBMak has already begun writing songs for a follow-up album. On "Sooner or Later," the band worked with rock producer Rob Cavallo (Alanis Morissette, Goo Goo Dolls, Green Day) and songwriter Oliver Leiber, but the next album, Barry said, is going to be "just us ... more BBMak."
Relationships--the ups and downs--will still be a heavy theme throughout the music, however. "People can relate to love. It's something that's never going to go out of fashion."
