Sonic Youth looks forward to 'Eternal' new album, tour

Indie-rockers once more, Sonic Youth will charge across the US this summer to support the band's forthcoming new studio effort, its first record on the Matador label.

The tour gets underway June 28 in Chicago, and will wind through the Midwest and South before heading to the West Coast, where the band will finish up the 21-city trek Aug. 2 in Oakland, CA. Dates are below.

"The Eternal," the band's vaunted return to the indie world, is due in stores June 9. Produced by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Drive-By Truckers), the album is the band's first effort for the Matador label after recording nine albums for Geffen, beginning with 1990's "Goo." The new set also marks the debut of former Pavement bassist Mark Ibold as a permanent, full-time member of the group.

"We've not had a record in our recent history that's been the subject of nearly as much speculation and anticipation," Matador's Gerard Cosloy said in a February press statement officially announcing the album. "Suffice to say, we're pretty amazed at the way the band delivered something this neoteric while still sounding like, well, themselves. Less of a reinvention and perhaps more to do with a particularly awesome dozen songs."

A free mp3 download of the new album's lead track, "Sacred Trickster," is currently available through the band's website.

The band's previous release, "Rather Ripped," surfaced in 2006.
