Kate Voegele's music career gets boost from TV

Kate Voegele 's role as Mia on the teen drama "One Tree Hill" and her ability to play concerts nationwide have given her fans unprecedented access to her music. It's something she appreciates.

"It's really been unbelievable the way that my music has taken off," Voegele said recently during an interview with LiveDaily while vacationing in Florida. "It's really been this amazing, unconventional, innovative little path to where I'm at. I owe all of that really to the incredible means by which 'One Tree Hill' has woven the music into their storyline. It's been pretty amazing.

"They've really written the storylines around the songs. So the scene enhances the song and the song enhances the scene. It's an amazing little symbiotic relationship and it's been unbelievable. TV played a huge role and it's so exciting to have that."

On the show and in concert, Voegele is now pushing her sophomore effort, "A Fine Mess," which hits stores May 18. She released her debut, "Don't Look Away," in January 2008.

"I've been playing and writing those songs on the first record since I was 15," Voegele said. "So it's really awesome to be putting some new material out there. Those songs on the first record, I love those songs. But, man, I've been playing them forever. So it's really fun to have something fresh for the gig."

The 22-year-old Cleveland native toured endlessly in support of "Don't Look Away," sharing stages with Natasha Bedingfield, The Veronicas, Matt Nathanson, Cary Brothers and Ben Lee. Despite her new album's imminent release, Voegele said that her current tour's set list includes mostly older material, as fans are not familiar with most of the new songs, save for "Manhattan from the Sky," which was woven into a storyline on "One Tree Hill," and her single "99 Times."

"I think we're going to try and balance it," Voegele said. "For the first part of the tour, the record's not gonna be out yet. We don't want to overload fans with all kinds of stuff: 'Hey you guys don't even know this stuff yet but you will hopefully in a few weeks.' For the first part of the tour, it's going to be probably about 60 percent old stuff, 40 new stuff. Then it'll probably flip flop once the record is out. We don't want to be one of those bands that neglects all the old music because there's a new record. It's about a balance. It's going to be good to have both and to have a blend."

Since 2008, the singer has connected with fans through her MySpace page. While performing across the country, Voegele will upload to MySpace behind-the-scenes footage from life on tour, including weekly videos, photos from her performances and tour information.
In addition to exclusive tour content, Voegele will also personally answer questions from fans once a week via her MySpace page's “Ask Kate” forum. Her page will provide fans with an intimate look at her while she balances her life on the road, being a college student and pursuing her acting career.

Voegele is working toward earning a bachelor of science degree in psychology degree at University of Phoenix; the school is sponsoring her current tour, marking the first time a MySpace Records artist has landed a sponsor for a headlining run.

"It's a good major if you're a songwriter," Voegele said with a laugh. "It goes hand in hand: a bunch of overanalyzing and overthinking."
