The Lemonheads tour ahead of new all-covers album

Alt-rockers The Lemonheads will set out on a headlining tour late next month in support of the band's forthcoming all-covers record, "Varshons."

The group kicks off the tour with a May 30 headlining appearance at Boston's Earthfest, and the outing then heads to the West Coast before inching back eastward again, coming to a close June 16 in Baltimore, MD. Dates are below.

The band's latest studio effort, "Varshons," is due in stores June 23. The album features the Lemonheads covering songs from an eclectic group of musicians, ranging from G.G. Allin to Leonard Cohen. The idea of an all-covers set was inspired by Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers, according to the group.

"Making a good mix is an art, and Gibby has it down," said bandleader Evan Dando in a press release. "I thought it would be fun to share these songs with other people like he shared them with me. So I picked the 'greatest hits' from his mixes and covered them, along with a few other songs I always wanted to play."

In 2007, the band issued its eighth album, a self-titled set that closed a nine-year recording gap from the band with its first new disc since 1996's "Car Button Cloth," which featured Dando and a completely different Lemonheads lineup. Dando and drummer Bill Stevenson co-produced the eponymous album at Stevenson's Blasting Room studios in Ft. Collins, CO.
