Dixie Chicks become the fourth country act to go Diamond
Dixie Chicks ' 1998 major label debut “Wide Open Spaces” (Columbia Nashville) was certified for sales of 10 million copies in September, making the trio the fourth country act in history to gain the Recording Industry Association of America’s Diamond album certification.
“This is a music industry success story,” RIAA president and CEO Hillary Rosen said in a statement. “This record grew slowly while the band built up their fanbase.”
Kenny Rogers, Garth Brooks and Shania Twain were the only country acts to previously surpass the 10 million sales mark for a single album, according to the RIAA.
Several other country releases also reached RIAA milestones in September. Faith Hill’s “Faith” (Warner Bros.) hit the 5 million sales mark, Kenny Chesney's “Everywhere We Go” (BNA Entertainment) hit 2 million, and Martina McBride earned her fourth straight million-seller with “Emotion” (RCA Nashville). Twelve-year-old country singer Billy Gilman picked up his first Platinum certification for his debut “One Voice” (Epic Nashville).
Hitting the 7 million mark in September were Eminem’s “The Marshall Mathers LP” (Interscope), Britney Spears’ “Oops! …I Did it Again” (Jive), Savage Garden’s “Savage Garden” (Columbia), and “No Way Out” by Puff Daddy & the Family (Bad Boy/Arista).
“The Writing’s on the Wall” by Destiny’s Child (Columbia) and Creed’s “Human Clay” hit the six million sales mark in September. Korn’s “Follow the Leader” (Epic) was certified four times Platinum.
Other RIAA Multi-Platinum certifications went to Macy Gray for “On How Life Is” (Epic) and Nelly’s “Country Grammar” (Universal), each of which surpassed the 3 million sales mark in September.
Earning Platinum certification for 1 million in sales were Pink’s “Can’t Take Me Home” (LaFace), the “Bad Boys” soundtrack (Columbia), Vitamin C’s self-titled release (Elektra), Yolanda Adams’ “Mountain High… Valley Low” (Elektra), Big Tymers’ “I Got that Work” (Uptown) and Bon Jovi’s “Crush” (Island/Mercury).
