Album Review: Art Brut, "Art Brut Vs. Satan" (Downtown)
For their third LP, cheeky punk-pop disco rockers Art Brut take on Satan--er, their previous record label--and have adamant ideas about public transit, maddening hangovers, comic-book loving gals and chocolate milkshakes.
The chatty, forthright lyrics are as punchy and humorous as ever, particularly when Eddie Argos rattles on about his affection for buses, DC comics and eating cereal everyday--humbly acknowledging that he is already 28. The topics are definitely relative and fun. "Alcoholics Unanimous" is the perfect work-commute hangover anthem, featuring the repetitious, rowdy chorus: "I was up all night/(He's been up all night)/I've been making mistakes/(Lots of mistakes)/I'm hiding it well/(Not very well)/But I don't feel great."
"Am I Normal" is a delightful stream-of-consciousness rant about Argos' obsession with a female, while "DC Comics and Chocolate Milkshakes" is a giddy, what's-my-age-again? romp that's undeniably silly and reckless. "Mysterious Bruises" is a sweet contemplation about random bumps and scratches acquired over a drunken night. Argos muses: "I only dance to songs I like/So I was sat down most the night/I don't know how I managed to do this/I woke up this morning covered in bruises."
Aside from drinking and adolescent affections, Art Brut also take on the establishment. "Demons Out!" is a tune that speaks to the current state of the recording industry and its chart-focused flaws. It's political and pointed without being a musical bore. Produced by Pixies front man Frank Black, "Art Brut Vs. Satan" has an ideal balance of anti-establishment attitude and effortless catchiness. With such snappy hooks and witty commentary, Art Brut takes on Satan without a single glitch.
