Two releases revisit Creedence Clearwater Revival's early work
Two Creedence Clearwater Revival collections--a live album and a covers set--will hit stores next week (5/26) as part of Fantasy Records' continued reissue program, which last year marked CCR's 40th anniversary with the re-release of the band's first six studio albums, according to a press release.
"Creedence Covers the Classics" highlights the band's taste for 1950s rock-and-roll with versions of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell On You," Little Richard's "Good Golly Miss Molly," Ricky Nelson's "Hello Mary Lou" and Roy Orbison's "Ooby Dooby," all of which were set-list staples during CCR's early days gigging in the San Francisco Bay Area as Tommy Fogerty & the Blue Velvets, and later as Golliwogs. Also included on the disc are several cuts the band interpreted on stage to salute its musical influences, such as Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup's "My Baby Left Me" and Dale Hawkins' "Susie Q," which went on to be CCR's first hit single.
The second upcoming release, "The Concert," is a fully remastered version of the band's 1970 live album that was recorded that same year at the Oakland Coliseum in California. The disc contains 14 live renditions of early CCR songs including "Born on the Bayou," "Green River," "Who'll Stop the Rain," "Proud Mary," "Fortunate Son" and "Down on the Corner." It also features covers of Ray Charles' "Night Time Is the Right Time" and Leadbelly's "The Midnight Special."
