Green Day taps big names as tour openers
The Bravery, Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand have been tapped as support acts for the North American leg of Green Day 's impending world tour.
The punk-pop trio wkicks off the tour July 3 in Seattle, WA, with The Bravery handling initial opening support through July 25 in Albany, NY. Kaiser Chiefs will take over starting with the July 27 New York City date, followed by Franz Ferdinand, who will assume the supporting role beginning Aug. 8 in Houston.
After finishing off the tour Aug. 25 in Inglewood, CA, Green Day will head to Europe for an overseas leg that runs well into November. The full tour schedule--including the band's recently announced June 4 "intimate" show in Los Angeles--is included below.
Green Day--singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool--are supporting their first album in five years, "21st Century Breakdown," which hit stores earlier this month. The trio's eighth studio effort, which has been in the works since early 2006, has already spawned the Top 10 single "Know Your Enemy," the album's lead track.
The group performed the forthcoming album in its entirety during a previous run of California club shows in April.
The album, despite spending only three days on store shelves during its debut week, claimed the No. 1 spot on The Billboard 200, moving about 215,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan retail figures as reported by Billboard. The record's first single, "Know Your Enemy," has climbed Billboard's Pop 100, peaking at No. 43 and topping both the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks and Hot Modern Rock Tracks charts at the same time.
Green Day's previous studio album, 2004's "American Idiot," which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart and spawned five hit singles, has sold more than 14 million copies worldwide since its release, according to the band. The album has also been transformed into a rock musical. Tony Award-winning director Michael Mayer will unveil the show Sept. 4 at Berkeley, CA's Roda Theatre. The theatrical story, which will include every song from the 2004 album, runs through Oct. 11. Tickets are available now at the venue's website.
