Eagles of Death Metal wear 'Heart On' sleeves
Eagles of Death Metal vocalist Jesse "Boots Electric" Hughes plays the part of rock 'n' roll lady killer just perfectly.
He flirts with reporters, offering to buy drinks at a local show, and knows how to wow the ladies. When describing the band's already-written follow-up to 2008's "Heart On," Hughes played the kindness card.
"It has a feel like a high school prom, getting felt up in the limo--a really hot feel," Hughes said, before adding, "It also has a romantic, 'What's wrong with taking your best girl out on a date and spending some dough on her so she can be happy?' feel. Rock 'n' roll forgot about ladies and about romance."
Hughes admitted that just as he embarked on his music career with cohort Joshua "Babyduck" Homme, he penned about five albums worth of material for Eagles of Death Metal.
"We constantly, constantly, constantly write," Hughes said, calling LiveDaily from Tucson, AZ. "I wrote the first four and half records in the first year of rock 'n' roll. I've got the next record in the can. It could seem frustrating to have a build up of all this music, but to me it's reassuring because I don't have to worry about writing, which is the biggest chunk and source of consternation and stress and doubt for any band."
In the meantime, Hughes and Homme are pushing "Heart On," an album named for Hughes' tendencies when writing material.
"Interestingly enough, the sexual innuendo was accidental," Hughes said. "Josh always says, when I'm writing my lyrics, I have my heart on my sleeve. So I thought the album should be called something in reference to (a) the heartland, where we were initially going to record it solely, and (b) the fact that I like to wear my heart on my sleeve. A couple days after I decided to do it, I was saying it over in my head, 'Heart On. Heart On. Oh wow. OK.'"
The album--recorded in Burbank, CA; Los Angeles; Boise, ID; Fargo, ND; and Amsterdam--was produced by both Homme and Hughes, and features a stellar line-up of special guests, including Kat Von D, Brian "B.O.C." O’Connor, Darlin' Dave Catching, Alain Johannes, Troy Van Leeuwen, Homme's wife Brody "Queen Bee" Dalle, and Kim "Koko Bubbles" Martinelli.
"Josh and I are computer nerds at heart," Hughes said. "We approach it like scientists or alchemists, rather than like hoity-toity artists. We play around with gadgets and stuff, the weird trinkets and knobs. The album, though, fits in perfectly [in the Eagles of Death Metal catalog]. It's another chapter in the Cheech and Chong of music."
