Social Distortion reveals slate of summer dates

Following a month-long European trek, punk icons Social Distortion will embark on a summertime tour of North America.

The 14-city outing, which begins July 17 in Seattle, visits a mixture of northern US markets and Canadian cities through early August. The band wraps up the slate of dates with an Aug. 8 performance at Wakestock, Canada's action-sports and music festival in Collingwood, Ontario. All-girl punk outfit Civet and The Strangers will open the shows. Details are included below.

Social Distortion most recently released "Sex, Love and Rock 'N' Roll," which surfaced in 2004. Founder and frontman Mike Ness, who dropped two solo albums in 1999--"Cheating at Solitaire" and "Under the Influences"--confirmed plans for a new Social D album, and possibly another solo set, in the near future.

"I think it could be really, really neat," Ness said during an AOL Spinner interview last year about planning an acoustic album for the band. "It's almost like a Bob Dylan/Bruce Springsteen/Johnny Cash kind of feel with a punk edge ... but acoustic."

Last month, the band announced the departure of long-time drummer Charlie "Chalo" Quintana.

"Playing with Social D for 10 years was a good time in my life," Quintana said in a message posted at the band's website. "I was lucky to play on two Social D records and the second solo album, and I am proud to have been part of the band. We hit some spectacular heights which I will never forget--adios amigos!"

Atom Willard, formerly of The Offspring and Angels & Airwaves, will take over the drum kit. Willard kicked off his new gig May 18 at Anaheim, CA's House of Blues, where Social D joined The Vandals, The Black Tibetans and Japanese Motors for a concert benefiting Jay Thomas, a surfer who suffered a spinal-cord injury earlier this year.
