Zombies, Yardbirds rock 'Royalty' tour
The Rock Royalty Tour will roll through North America this summer, featuring '60s survivors The Zombies , The Yardbirds and the Spencer Davis Group.
The Zombies-headlined outing kicks off June 26 in San Diego and runs through a July 19 appearance in British Columbia, with The Zombies handling the final three dates on their own. Details are included below.
Currently featuring original members Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent, along with bassist Jim Rodford, guitarist Keith Airey and drummer Steve Rodford, The Zombies are touring behind "Odessey and Oracle: 40th Anniversary Live Concert." The 2008 concert celebrated the band's 1968 album, "Odessey and Oracle."
According to a press release, the band will play a mix of their own hits ("She's Not There," "Time of the Season," "Tell Her No") and Argent's solo material from the '70s ("Hold Your Head Up"), along with material from "Odessey and Oracle."
The legendary Yardbirds were renowned as the breeding group for iconic guitarists of the '60s, with Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck all serving stints with the band.
Founding members Chris Dreja (rhythm guitar) and Jim McCarty (drums/songwriter) recorded "Birdland," which surfaced in 2003, with new members Gypie Mayo (lead guitar, backing vocals), John Idan (bass, lead vocals) and Alan Glen (harmonica, backing vocals). The album features seven new cuts, as well as remakes of eight of the group's '60s-era classics: "I'm Not Talking," "The Nazz are Blue," "Train Kept a Rolling," "Mr. You're a Better Man Than I," "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago," "Heart Full of Soul," "Over Under Sideways Down," "For Your Love" and "Shapes of Things."
The Spencer Davis group released its biggest hit, "Gimme Some Lovin'," in 1966, with Steve Winwood on lead vocals. Winwood left the band in 1967 to form his own group, Traffic.
