VH1's 'Hip Hop Honors' to celebrate Def Jam Records
VH1 will honor the achievements of hip-hop label Def Jam Records for its sixth annual "Hip Hop Honors" celebration this October.
The homage to the 25-year-old record label will air Oct. 13 from the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Howard Gilman Opera House. Comedian/actor Tracy Morgan will return for the third time to host the event.
The music and influence of Def Jam artists will be recognized through performances from some of today's biggest artists, according to a press release, though no acts have yet been announced. This will be the first time VH1's "Hip Hop Honors" has singled out a record label.
"It is impossible to pay tribute to the best in hip hop without recognizing Def Jam Records," Lee Rolontz, Executive Vice President of Music Production, said in a press release. "Throughout the years, VH1 has honored numerous artists from the Def Jam label, but due to the magnificent impact that Def Jam as a company has made on not only hip hop culture but pop culture as a whole, we thought they definitely deserved the opportunity to be honored."
Founded by Rick Rubin, Def Jam Records currently handles artists includingKanye West, Ne-Yo, Patti LeBelle, LL Cool J, The Roots, Nas and The Isley Brothers, among others.
